Amazon's €16bn Germany Investment Signals Long-Term European Expansion
Amazon will invest over €16bn in Germany in 2027, expanding cloud, AI, logistics and media operations, underlining the country’s central role in its European strategy.

Amazon will invest more than €16 billion in Germany in 2027, in a move that underscores the country’s importance as a linchpin for the company's long-term European strategy.
The investment, announced on 21 October 2026, will bring Amazon’s total spending in Germany since 2010 to over €100 billion. The new funds will be channelled into expanding Amazon Web Services (AWS) cloud infrastructure, developing artificial intelligence and robotics, advancing satellite communications, and upgrading logistics and media production operations.
A significant portion—€4.8 billion—will be dedicated to bolstering the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region, reflecting growing demand for cloud and AI services across the continent. Amazon will also launch a second Berlin research facility focused on robotics and AI, part of its broader effort to position Germany as a centre for technological innovation.
Modernisation programmes at fulfilment centres in Bad Hersfeld, Dortmund, and Werne are expected to be completed by 2027, while ongoing work at facilities in Koblenz, Pforzheim, and Rheinberg will continue into 2028. These upgrades are designed to boost efficiency and capacity in Amazon’s distribution network.
The company expects the investment to create over 3,000 new jobs, expanding its German workforce beyond the current 40,000 permanent employees. This is likely to provide a direct stimulus to local economies and reinforce Germany’s status as a top destination for tech investment in Europe.
Amazon’s expansion aligns with broader European ambitions to lead in digitalisation, clean energy, and artificial intelligence. The company’s commitment to sourcing 1.3GW of carbon-free energy from North and Baltic Sea wind farms supports both operational sustainability and EU decarbonisation goals.
The move comes amid intensifying scrutiny from EU regulators, who are closely monitoring competition and data privacy issues related to large technology firms. Economic fluctuations and the pace of adoption for emerging technologies remain potential risks for Amazon’s strategy.
Nevertheless, the planned investment is expected to enhance Amazon’s competitive footing in Europe, particularly in cloud computing and AI services, and may attract further foreign investment to Germany’s digital economy. For local communities, the expansion promises job creation and new opportunities in high-growth sectors.
David Zapolsky, Amazon’s chief global affairs and legal officer, said the scale of the investment highlights the company’s long-term commitment to Germany. Katherina Reiche, Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy, welcomed the announcement as evidence of Germany’s growing appeal as a technology and innovation hub.
Key stakeholders in the investment also include European aerospace firms Arianespace, ArianeGroup, and MT Aerospace, which are partnering with Amazon on satellite communications initiatives vital for its future connectivity projects.
