European Union Invests €260 Million to Expand EllaLink Submarine Cable Connecting Europe and Brazil

The European Union is reinforcing its digital partnership with Brazil through a €260 million investment to expand the EllaLink submarine cable, one of the most strategic digital infrastructure projects connecting Europe and Latin America.

The investment aims to increase data transmission capacity, improve network resilience and support the growing demand for secure, high-speed digital connectivity between the two regions.

Operational since 2021, EllaLink provides the first direct high-capacity fiber-optic connection between Europe and South America, linking Sines, Portugal, with Fortaleza, Brazil, without routing internet traffic through North America. The project has become a cornerstone of Europe's strategy to diversify digital infrastructure and strengthen technological sovereignty.

The new funding will allow the network to expand its capacity while supporting emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, cloud computing, scientific research and next-generation digital services.
