Tauragė secures €20 million EIB loan to drive climate-neutral transformation
Lithuania’s Tauragė will use €20 million from the European Investment Bank to expand sustainable transport and infrastructure as it targets climate neutrality by 2030.

Tauragė has secured a €20 million loan from the European Investment Bank (EIB) to accelerate its transition toward climate neutrality by 2030, marking a significant step for the Lithuanian city’s sustainable development ambitions.
The funding is part of a broader investment programme exceeding €110 million. According to the EIB, the financing will underpin new projects including a 16.9-kilometre network of cycling paths and the acquisition of additional zero-emission buses. These upgrades are expected to advance the city’s efforts to cut emissions, modernise public infrastructure and enhance mobility for residents.
Dovydas Kaminskas, Mayor of Tauragė, has positioned the city as a frontrunner among Europe’s mid-sized municipalities striving for climate neutrality. The EIB’s involvement, both as a lender and advisor, signals confidence in Tauragė’s strategy and is expected to boost the city’s profile as a model for sustainable urban development.
The initiative aligns with the EU’s Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, contributing to the bloc’s broader environmental and climate objectives. Karl Nehammer, EIB Vice-President, highlighted the project’s potential to inspire similar efforts in other European cities, particularly those outside major metropolitan areas.
For local communities, the impact of the EIB financing is tangible. Residents can expect improved air quality, safer and more accessible transport options, and upgraded urban spaces. The investments are also anticipated to stimulate the local economy by generating jobs and attracting further private and public capital.
However, the initiative is not without risks. Potential delays in project delivery or broader economic fluctuations could pose challenges to Tauragė’s climate-neutrality target. Nevertheless, with robust support from key stakeholders and alignment with EU priorities, Tauragė’s experience may shape future sustainable infrastructure investments across Europe.
