Webuild and Odebrecht selected to build key Lobito Corridor copper rail in Angola

Webuild SpA of Italy and Odebrecht Engenharia & Construção SA of Brazil have been named preferred bidders for the construction of the 830-kilometer Lobito Corridor rail line in Angola, a project expected to transform global copper and cobalt supply chains.

The Lobito Corridor will link central Africa’s prolific copper and cobalt deposits to the Atlantic coast, creating a direct route for mineral exports from the Democratic Republic of Congo and Zambia. By facilitating faster, more efficient transportation, the project is set to enhance Africa’s role in supplying critical minerals to global markets.

For European companies involved in resource extraction and logistics, the corridor opens new opportunities to access and invest in African supply chains. The improved logistics may also translate into more reliable sourcing for industries dependent on copper and cobalt, including Europe’s electric vehicle and battery sectors.

Latin American firms, especially those in construction and resources, may see new prospects for collaboration and expansion in African infrastructure through the involvement of a major regional player like Odebrecht. The project could pave the way for further cross-continental partnerships as demand for critical minerals intensifies.

The selection of Webuild and Odebrecht signals a competitive edge for European and Latin American companies in African infrastructure, but the project also carries risks. Potential delays tied to regulation, logistics, or regional economic instability could affect both timelines and profitability.

Still, the Lobito Corridor is poised to reshape mineral trade flows and may serve as a template for future infrastructure initiatives. Companies and investors are watching closely for further details on project milestones and financing arrangements, as well as potential impacts on local economies.
