GLP-1 Drug Boom Drives 150% Surge in LATAM Cargo Pharmaceutical Shipments Between Europe and Brazil
LATAM Cargo has reported a 150% year-on-year jump in pharmaceuticals transported between Europe and Brazil from January to July, driven by soaring demand for GLP-1 medications for type 2 diabetes.

LATAM Cargo has recorded a 150% increase in pharmaceutical cargo transported between Europe and Brazil from January to July 2026 compared to the same period last year, as demand for GLP-1-based medications for type 2 diabetes reshapes the region’s pharmaceutical logistics.
The company, responsible for nearly 32,000 tonnes of cargo moved between the two regions in the first seven months of 2026, attributes much of this growth to the rise of GLP-1 drugs, which now account for approximately 15% of total pharmaceutical volume transported on these routes.
According to Jorge Carretero, cargo sales manager Europe at LATAM Airlines Group, the increase highlights the accelerating need for specialized cold-chain and time-sensitive logistics solutions in the pharmaceutical sector. Total cargo volume between Europe and Brazil rose 27% in the same period, underlining the broader expansion in cross-Atlantic trade.
The sharp rise in GLP-1 shipments comes amid global interest in therapies for type 2 diabetes, a key area for European pharmaceutical producers targeting the Brazilian market. This trend is driving investment in specialized transport capacity, with dedicated handling, monitoring, and compliance protocols required for sensitive medical products.
For LATAM Cargo, the surge strengthens its competitive position, underscoring the importance of tailored logistics in a sector marked by strict regulatory and quality requirements. The company’s performance signals a shift in operational priorities across the supply chain, with pharmaceutical logistics emerging as a strategic growth area.
However, the market faces potential risks from regulatory changes affecting pharmaceutical transport and volatility in demand for GLP-1 medications. Industry participants are watching for further expansion in specialized logistics services and increased routing options between Europe and Brazil, as the sector adapts to evolving demand and compliance standards.
The sustained increase in pharmaceutical flows reinforces the region’s significance for logistics providers and highlights opportunities for investment in advanced transport solutions tailored to the needs of the healthcare industry.
