Mapfre Acquires Strategic Stake in InsurTech Tuio to Accelerate AI-Driven Insurance Innovation
Spanish insurer MAPFRE has acquired a 38.9% stake in Spanish insurtech Tuio, strengthening its commitment to artificial intelligence and digital insurance. The investment is intended to accelerate Tuio's growth in Spain and internationally while reinforcing MAPFRE's broader digital transformation strategy.

Mapfre has taken a significant step in its digital transformation strategy by acquiring a 38.9% shareholding in Spanish insurtech Tuio, a fast-growing digital insurer that has attracted attention for its AI-powered business model and its integration with ChatGPT. The investment reflects MAPFRE's increasing focus on technologies that are reshaping the insurance industry.
Betting on the future of digital insurance
Founded in 2021, Tuio has positioned itself as a fully digital insurer offering home, motor, life and pet insurance through a technology-first platform designed to simplify the customer experience.
The company has distinguished itself through the extensive use of artificial intelligence to streamline underwriting, customer service and policy management. It also became one of the first insurers to integrate directly with ChatGPT, allowing users to obtain insurance quotations through conversational AI. According to MAPFRE, this channel already contributes more than 20% of Tuio's new customers.
Strategic investment rather than full acquisition
Rather than pursuing a takeover, MAPFRE has opted for a minority investment that supports Tuio's continued growth while allowing the insurtech to maintain its independent operating model.
The insurer said the partnership will help Tuio accelerate the development of new technological capabilities and expand into additional markets without losing the agility that has characterised the company since its launch.
The move also aligns with MAPFRE's wider innovation strategy, which places greater emphasis on technology, data and artificial intelligence as drivers of future business growth.
AI reshaping the insurance sector
Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the global insurance industry by improving pricing models, automating claims management and enhancing customer interactions.
Traditional insurers are increasingly partnering with technology companies and startups to accelerate innovation, reduce operating costs and respond to changing consumer expectations for faster, digital-first services.
MAPFRE has described AI—and particularly the emergence of agentic AI—as one of the most significant technological shifts facing the insurance industry and the wider digital economy.
Part of a broader innovation strategy
The investment complements MAPFRE's ongoing efforts to modernise its operations through open innovation, collaboration with startups and greater integration of artificial intelligence into its business.
The company has recently strengthened its innovation model to improve collaboration across business units, accelerate pilot projects and ensure innovation initiatives are more closely aligned with strategic objectives. More than 4.4 million customers have already benefited from projects developed under these programmes.
A changing competitive landscape
The partnership illustrates how established insurers are increasingly investing in digital-native businesses rather than developing every innovation internally.
As AI continues to reshape financial services, collaborations between incumbent insurers and technology-driven startups are expected to become an increasingly important feature of the industry's evolution, helping companies respond more quickly to new technologies and changing customer behaviour.
