PaperFoam secures €2 million loan to scale sustainable packaging in Europe and beyond

PaperFoam, a Dutch manufacturer of biodegradable packaging made from starch and natural fibres, has secured a €2 million loan from Invest International to expand its production facility in the Czech Republic and bolster its international operations.

The funding will enable PaperFoam to increase manufacturing capacity in the Czech Republic, positioning the company to meet rising demand for sustainable packaging across Europe. The loan will also support its working capital requirements in Malaysia and the U.S., marking a push to scale globally.

PaperFoam's products, which are designed to replace conventional plastics, align with growing regulatory and consumer pressures for greener alternatives. This expansion comes as European Union policymakers strengthen environmental targets and packaging waste directives, creating new opportunities for companies offering eco-friendly solutions.

For Latin American exporters, the spread of sustainable packaging technologies in Europe could influence supply chain standards and market access, especially as global brands prioritise environmentally responsible materials.

Government-backed financing, such as the one provided by Invest International, is becoming a catalyst for innovation in the sector. If PaperFoam succeeds in scaling its technology, it could gain a stronger foothold in the competitive sustainable packaging market, boosting its revenue and setting a benchmark for peers.

Operational risks include the challenge of ramping up production while maintaining quality, as well as uncertainties in market demand across different regions. However, the company’s expansion demonstrates the rising commercial viability of biodegradable packaging.
