Average prices for standalone solar power purchase agreements (PPAs) in Spain declined to €30.93/MWh in the third quarter of 2026, a 7.7% drop compared to the same period last year. The fall comes despite rising development costs, which are adding pressure to project viability for many developers.

A growing interest in battery energy storage systems (BESS) is reshaping the economics of Spain’s renewables sector. Hybrid solar-and-storage contracts reached an average of €48/MWh, a notable premium compared to standalone solar PPAs. Analysts say the higher prices for hybrid contracts reflect the value of flexibility and grid stability that BESS can provide, especially as curtailment of renewable energy increases.

Spain saw renewable energy curtailment reach 2.5 TWh in the first half of 2026, more than triple the volume recorded in the same period of 2025. This surge in curtailed energy has made hybrid PPAs with storage increasingly attractive, as they allow producers to store excess generation and sell electricity when demand and prices are higher.

The decline in PPA prices, combined with increasing development costs, may put standalone solar projects under financial strain. However, the shift toward hybrid solar-plus-storage solutions is attracting new investments and could help mitigate risks associated with curtailed renewable output.

For Europe and Latin America, these trends in Spain provide a reference for managing the growing share of renewables on the grid and the importance of storage in enhancing system reliability. Companies and investors are watching closely as operational assets linked to PPAs gain traction, offering more secure revenue streams amid market volatility.
