EIB and Cellnex sign €375 million loan to accelerate 5G rollout and digital transition in Europe

The European Investment Bank (EIB) has signed a €375 million loan with Cellnex to support the development and deployment of 5G telecommunications infrastructure in Spain, France, Italy, and Portugal, in a move set to drive digital transition and regional economic development across Europe.

The financing will help Cellnex mobilize a total investment of €770 million targeting new mobile towers, urban sites, and the modernization of Spain’s digital terrestrial television network. The project aims to bridge the digital divide by ensuring that 50% of new towers are installed in EU cohesion regions, enhancing connectivity for both citizens and businesses.

This initiative directly supports the EU’s strategic goal of strengthening its digital autonomy and aligns with the TechEU initiative, which seeks to mobilize €250 billion in technology investment. By expanding access to high-speed networks, the project is expected to boost economic competitiveness and foster innovation across urban and rural areas.

For Europe’s cohesion regions, improved 5G infrastructure is seen as a catalyst for economic growth, enabling new business models and supporting the digitalization of public services. The deployment, however, may face regulatory hurdles and competition from other telecom providers, potentially affecting timelines.

The partnership between the EIB and Cellnex demonstrates the increasing importance of public-private collaboration in financing Europe’s digital infrastructure. According to the EIB’s official press release, this kind of targeted investment is essential to meet the EU’s objectives for digital transformation and competitiveness in the global market.
