Hypersonica raises €100M to boost European defence autonomy, challenging US reliance

Hypersonica, a British-German defence startup, has raised €100 million in Series B funding to accelerate the development of hypersonic long-range missiles, signalling a strategic push for greater European autonomy in advanced weaponry.

The funding round was co-led by Lightspeed and General Catalyst, both US-based investors, with continued support from existing backers Plural and 201 Ventures. This follows Hypersonica’s previous €23.2 million Series A round in February 2023, underlining growing investor confidence in the company’s ambitions.

The new capital will enable Hypersonica to expand its R&D capabilities and compete with established defence contractors, strengthening Europe's position in the global hypersonic weapons race. With European governments seeking to reduce their dependence on US military technology, the funding is seen as a pivotal moment for the continent’s defence sector.

Analysts note that greater European defence autonomy could alter transatlantic defence dynamics, potentially impacting procurement and policy decisions within NATO. While US investors remain central to the company’s growth, Hypersonica’s trajectory may encourage further investment in European defence innovation and lead to new partnerships with European governments.

The development comes amid heightened interest in hypersonic missile technology, where speed and range offer significant tactical advantages. However, Hypersonica may face regulatory hurdles in weapon development and strong competition from established defence firms. The company’s success could set a precedent for Europe’s ability to nurture homegrown defence leaders and reduce reliance on transatlantic supply chains.
