Petrobras makes third ultra-deep oil discovery in Amapá, boosting Brazil’s energy prospects

Petrobras has confirmed a third oil discovery in ultra-deep waters off the coast of Amapá, underlining the growing strategic importance of Brazil’s Equatorial Margin as an emerging oil frontier.

Announced on October 30, the discovery was made in block FZA-M-59 at a water depth of 2,886 meters, about 175 kilometers from the Amapá coast. This latest find follows earlier discoveries in August and early October 2026, further strengthening Petrobras’ campaign to expand the country’s hydrocarbon reserves.

The drilling campaign is set to conclude as the Foresea ODN II drillship prepares to relocate to the Potiguar Basin. These results reinforce the company’s strategy to replenish oil and gas reserves, a move seen as critical for sustaining Brazil’s energy independence and enhancing its role in the global oil market.

The Equatorial Margin, once considered a frontier region, is rapidly gaining traction among international investors and industry observers. With each new discovery, prospects for increased oil production and revenue grow, potentially transforming the local and national energy landscape.

However, the company’s expansion faces ongoing regulatory and environmental challenges. Petrobras secured a drilling license for the Morpho well in August 2025, following a previous rejection by Ibama in May 2023. Environmental concerns linked to ultra-deepwater operations remain under close scrutiny, with licensing processes reflecting heightened regulatory oversight.

Despite these obstacles, Petrobras’ recent success is expected to stimulate further exploration and investment in the region. As Brazil positions itself as a leading oil producer, the Equatorial Margin’s development will be closely watched by policymakers, companies, and investors seeking to assess both the opportunities and risks associated with deepwater exploration.
