National Grid will invest up to €478 million to extend the operational life of the UK-France IFA power interconnector to at least 2050, bolstering Britain's ability to manage rising electricity demand from artificial intelligence and electric vehicles.

The IFA, jointly owned with France’s RTE, is Britain's largest subsea electricity connection by capacity and has supplied power to about 3 million British homes annually since its 1986 launch. The new investment aims to secure electricity flows for decades to come, as cross-border interconnectors become central to the UK’s energy strategy.

Since 2023, National Grid's network of interconnectors—including the IFA—has delivered €2.39 billion in net benefits to British consumers by providing access to cheaper French nuclear power instead of relying on gas-fired generation. The ability to import and export power helps stabilise prices, particularly during periods of high demand or supply constraints.

The push to extend the IFA's lifespan comes as the UK’s electricity infrastructure faces unprecedented strain from the growth of energy-intensive technologies. Rebecca Sedler, President of NGV UK at National Grid, highlighted the role of interconnectors in providing flexibility and supporting the transition to a low-carbon grid.

While the investment is expected to lower long-term energy costs and reinforce security of supply, electricity flows between the UK and France will still depend on market conditions. Fluctuations in demand or price may dictate whether electricity is imported or exported at any given time.

National Grid has committed to investing at least €83.8 billion across its group by March 2031. The company sees interconnectors as a critical lever for managing volatility and supporting the UK’s evolving energy needs. For further details, see OilPrice.com.
